DESCRIPTION:The increasing popularity of location based social services su
ch as Facebook Places\, Foursquare and Google Latitude\, solicits a new tr
end in fusing social networking with real world sensing. The availability
of a wide range of sensing technologies in our everyday environment presen
ts an opportunity to further enrich social networking systems with fine-gr
ained real-world sensing. However\, the introduction of passive sensing in
to a social networking application disrupts the traditional\, user-initiat
ed input to social services\, raising both privacy and acceptability conce
rns. In this work we present an empirical study of the introduction of a s
ensor-driven social sharing application within the working environment of
a research institution. Our study is based on a real deployment of a syste
m that involves location tracking\, conversation monitoring\, and interact
ion with physical objects. By utilising surveys\, interviews and experienc
e sampling techniques\, we report on our findings regarding privacy and us
er experience issues\, and significant factors that can affect acceptabili
ty of such services by the users. Our results suggest that such systems de
liver significant value in the form of self reflection and comparison wit
h others\, while privacy concerns are raised primarily by the limited cont
rol over the way individuals are projected to their peers.\n\nThis talk wi
ll also be presented at Pervasive 2012.\n
