DESCRIPTION:Setting the sample size for health intervention trials typical
ly requires interaction between statisticians and health professionals. In
this talk I will bring together some of the methods for sample size calcu
lation to show how the core formulae can help the statistician to improve
the inputs and outputs. The second part of the talk consists of an introdu
ction to biomarkers and appropriate late phase designs for their evaluatio
n\, with a worked example to set the sample size of a two-stage early-phas
e biomarker study with local health professionals.\n\n
