DESCRIPTION:Forecasting and data assimilation of atmospheric composition h
ave become important activities at ECMWF as part of the MACC project. MACC
makes daily global forecasts and has produced a re-analysis of atmospher
ic composition (2003-2010). Both data sets are freely available and can be
used for campaign support\, provision of boundary conditions\, climatolog
ical studies or model evaluation. We present the modelling system for rea
ctive gases and how it is used in the assimilation of satellite observatio
ns. We will discuss the benefit of data assimilation using two examples: t
he forecast of the severe pollution caused by fires in Russia in 2010 and
the forecast of volcanic SO2 plumes.
