DESCRIPTION:A shallow binary mixture of dry particles shaken horizontally 
 has a tendency to segregate into patterns of stripes if the combined filli
 ng fraction of two types of particles exceed a critical value. These patte
 rns resemble striping of stones\, the geological phenomenon observed in ma
 ny polar and high alpine environments. In this talk we will discuss result
 s of the experimental and theoretical studies aimed at understanding possi
 ble mechanisms behind the segregation phenomenon.
