DESCRIPTION:The paper is a general historiographical overview of French mi
 litary education in 18th century\, looking at how the military education o
 riginated and developed across various branches in the army: infantry\, ar
 tillery\, cavalry and so on. It covers the way it was instituted in France
 \, from the ideas for the court education of nobles in the late 16thcentur
 y through to the nationwide projects for military education in the 18th ce
 ntury.
