DESCRIPTION:We consider model predictive control (MPC) schemes in which th
e stage cost is not necessarily related to a stabilization or tracking pro
blem. In particular\, it does not need to be sign definite and the minimum
of the stage cost does not need to be an equilibrium of the\ncontrolled d
ynamics. We investigate whether MPC without terminal constraints is able t
o produce approximately infinite horizon optimal closed loop solutions and
to reproduce the optimal trajectories. We show that - along with suitable
regularity and dissipativity conditions - a so called turnpike property c
an be used in order to conclude such results and explain why exponential t
urnpike properties are particularly\nuseful in this context. Motivated by
this result\, we present a sufficient condition for such an exponential tu
 rnpike property.\n
