DESCRIPTION:The recent military confrontations between the newly independe
nt South Sudan and Sudan raise questions as to why intensive peacemaking a
nd peacebuilding interventions in this troubled region have not brought an
end to war. The focus has been on oil and border demarcations\, yet viole
nt conflict is occurring at multiple interlocking levels too often hidden
from view.\n\n* What is the likelihood of military escalation into wholesa
le war between the two Sudans?\n* Why did the Thabo Mbeki led AU High Leve
l Panel mediation effort fail?\n* How do more 'local' conflicts in the Blu
 e Nile\, Nuba Mountains\, Abyei\, Darfur\, Jonglei and Upper Nile regions
relate to this interstate crisis?\n* Where and how have peacemaking and pe
acebuilding in the Sudans failed?\n\nThe CGHR roundtable will explore thes
e and other questions.\n\nSpeakers:\n\nDr Sarah Nouwen - University Lectur
