m\n\nOn Tuesday 12 June\, 2012\, Dr Ndwapi Ndwapi\, Head of the Office of
Strategy Management in Botswana’s Ministry of Health\, will give a publi
c address on “Global Health Leadership and Management” at Judge School
of Business at the University of Cambridge. Dr Ndwapi has served as Dire
ctor of Clinical Services in the Ministry of Health and is the co-founder
of the first public HIV clinic in Botswana.\n \nDr Ndwapi’s insights on
leadership and management derive from his notable background and his invo
lvement in a recent initiative between the Ministry of Health\, USAID (PEP
FAR) and Addenbrooke’s Abroad to institute a Health Leadership and Manag
ement Development Programme in Botswana. The Health Leadership and Manage
ment Development Programme establishes management development and performa
nce improvement initiatives to raise standards of leadership and managemen
t in the Botswana healthcare system.\n \nProfessor Dame Sandra Dawson\, KP
MG Professor of Management at Judge Business School\, will chair the discu
ssion\, drawing on her extensive work in organisationalanalysis\, leadersh
 ip and health management.\n \nAfter Dr Ndwapi’s speech\, discussants\, r
epresenting a range of perspectives\, will be invited to respond. Discuss
 ants include:\nEvelyn Brealey\, of Addenbrooke’s Abroad\,\nProfessor Ali
nah K Segobye\, of the University of Botswana\nProfessor Jaideep Prabhu\,
of the University of Cambridge.\n \nDr Ndwapi and the discussants will als
o take questions from the audience. The event will be followed by a netwo
rking reception.\n \nThis event is part of the Humanitarian Centre’s Cam
bridge Global Health Year. The Humanitarian Centre is a Cambridge-based ne
twork for international relief and development affiliated with the Univers
ity of Cambridge. \nThe Cambridge Global Health Year brings together indiv
iduals and organisations--from across disciplines\, sectors\, and countrie
s--to explore Cambridge's contribution to pressing global health issues.\n
\nAbout the Health Leadership and Management Development Programme:\nSince
2006\, Botswana’s Ministry of Health and Addenbrooke’s Abroad have be
en working together through a link with Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambri
dge and Princess Marina Hospital in Gaborone. As the link developed\, Add
enbrooke’s Abroad also began working strategically with the University o
f Botswana and the Ministry of Health. \nIn 2010\, a study undertaken by A
ddenbrooke’s Abroad\, at the request of the Ministry of Health (MoH)\, c
oncluded that improved healthcare leadership and management in the Botswan
a healthcare sector were highly desirable\, and that the creation of a Hea
lthcare Leadership and Management Development Programme (HLMDP) would faci
litate the development of essential skills and knowledge.\nThe MoH and Add
enbrooke’s Abroad have designed the HLMDP using collaborative planning a
nd decision-making\, joint working\, the sharing of expertise and\, whenev
er possible\, the creation of opportunities to learn from each other for t
he benefit of staff and patients in Botswana and Cambridge.\nThe HLMDP wil
l contribute to the achievement of the MoH 2012-16 strategy target of impr
oved management and leadership of the health system.\n \nKeynote Speaker:
Dr. Ndwapi Ndwapi\nDr. Ndwapi is currently the manager of the Ministerial
Strategy Office of the Ministry of Health\, Botswana. He has previously wo

ommittee of the Botswana Ministry of Health. He has previously served in a
clinical advisory role in ARV therapy for the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
Dr. Ndwapi received his doctor of medicine from the University of Pennsylv
ania\, in the United States.\n\n“Leadership is a natural human social in
stinct. It is an ability to coordinate the people\, skills and the resour
ces at your disposal in order to achieve a certain goal. I was working wi
th a clinical team with various degrees of knowledge—in some cases no kn
owledge at all— [and] also having to deal with the interface between us
as technical people—health care providers—and the rest of the system:
the community at large\, the government and other organisations. So my ph
ilosophy of leadership was: I was going to be that bridge\, between the kn
owledge base that we had as health care workers\, and what needed to happe
n for us to be able to use that knowledge to deliver care.” —Ndapi Nda
pi\, “Profile in Leadership\,” from Everyday Leadership\n\nChair: Prof

\, organisational change and knowledge sharing\; health management and he
alth policy. In 2009 she led the report on the nascent National Leadershi
p Council for the NHS\n\n \n\n“Leadership is about the relationships you
build. That said\, performance is key – you can’t be a great leader
 in the abstract.”\n—Sandra Dawson\, from TrainingZone\n\nDiscussants:\

onsibility for the strategic development and management of the programme.

gnition that leadership and management for the healthcare sector is as imp
ortant\, if not more important almost\, then improvements in clinical care
.”\n —Evelyn Brealely\, from Managing for Development\n\nAlinah Segoby
e is a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Botswana. She
is a member of the Botswana National Cultural Council and helped formulate
Botswana's National Policy on Culture. Professor Segobye is a founding me
mber of the Observatory of Cultural Policies in Africa.\n\n“Recent globa
l gatherings exploring the future of African intellectuals … recognised
the need for African leadership to shift their paradigms to place the Afri
can intellectual at the centre of the development agenda with consummate r
esources\, freedoms\, and strategic engagement of Africans in the diaspora
. It is indeed timely that such discussions should move from roundtable di
scussions to strategic action” \n—Alinah Segobye\, from Social Dynamic

ting: academic research takes some time to catch up with reality in a sens
 e. I mean\, if you talk to people in industry and people in policy in the
West\, there is no doubt in their mind that the future is in emerging mark
ets. “\n —Jaideep Prabhu\, from Managing for Development\n
