SUMMARY:“New Insights into the Mechanisms and Selectivity of Protein Deg
radation by the Proteasome Pathway” - Alfred Lewis Goldberg - Professor
of Cell Biology\, Harvard Medical School ( guest of St Johns College)

DESCRIPTION:Fred has been fascinated by protein degradation pathways since
his first days as a professor at Harvard In the 1970’s. The general opi
nion at the time was that the cell’s garbage collection was mostly done
by the lysosome.\n\nAlways pushing at the frontiers of cell biology\, Fred
discovered the proteasome and then it’s famous inhibitor MG--‐132.\n\
nWith careful chemical manipulations his group was able to generate the re
lated compound bortezomib that is now a billion dollar drug used for the t
reatment of a haematological cancer called myeloma.\n
