ation by the Proteasome Pathway - Professor Alfred Lewis Goldberg

DESCRIPTION:Fred Goldberg is a Professor of Cell Biology at Harvard Medica
l School and is visiting Cambridge as a guest of St. John’s College. \n
\nFred has been fascinated by protein degradation pathways since his first
days as a professor at Harvard in the 1970’s. The general opinion at th
e time was that the cell’s garbage collection was mostly done by the lys
osome. Always pushing at the frontiers of cell biology\, Fred discovered t
he proteasome and then it’s famous inhibitor MG-‐132. With careful c
hemical manipulations his group was able to generate the related compound
bortezomib that is now a billion dollar drug used for the treatment of a h
 aematological cancer called myeloma. \n
