DESCRIPTION:In standard scientific publications\, graphical communication
of uncertainty is generally\nlimited to error bars. It can be argued that
these are both ugly and misleading\, and if\nwe genuinely want to communi
cate variability and uncertainty to a general audience then\nmore imaginat
ive methods are necessary. We will look at a wide range of suggestions\nt
hat have been made\, including funnel plots\, density strips\, spaghetti p
lots\, fan\ncharts\, blurred icon arrays\, and 'the cone of uncertainty'.
I will also try and dig up\nthe limited formal experimental research on t
hese different options.\n\nThis discussion will be non-technical and suita
ble for all.\n\nReference\n\nVisualizing Uncertainty About the Future\n\nD
