DESCRIPTION:Perceptual learning has been shown to be effective in improvin
g visual functions in the normal visual system\, for adults who are well p
ast their critical period for visual development. In this talk\, I will b
riefly summarise findings from several studies that examined the feasibili
ty of applying perceptual learning to improve letter recognition performan
ce and reading speed in the normal periphery\, with the ultimate goal of t
esting the feasibility of using perceptual learning to improve reading spe
ed for people with bilateral central vision loss that is acquired later in
life\, such as people with macular degeneration.
