rof Ursula Martin\n\nINVITED TALK TITLE: So what's all this about impact..
..\n\nABSTRACT: It seems as if everyone wants to capture and measure the
"impact" of research - government\, research funders\, and the REF. But wh
at do we mean by impact\, why is it important\, and how do we measure it a
nyway? The talk will look at the background to different kinds of impact\,
who wants to know about it and why\, and reflect on how we encourage the
good stuff\, keep away from the bad stuff\, and above all continue to do t
errific science and engineering research.\n\nBIO \nUrsula Martin is Profes
sor of Computer Science at Queen Mary University of London\, where has bee
 n a Vice-Principal\, and Director impactQM\, a major EPSRC funded knowledg
e transfer initiative. She is a member of the UK Defence Science Advisory
Council\, and of the 2013 REF panel for computer science and informatics\,
and was the founding director of EPSRC's Mathematics for IT initiative\,
praised as a model of interdisciplinary good practice. She has published o
ver 50 papers\, and been PI on over £6 million in EPSRC\, EU and industry
research grants\, including recent work with Microsoft\, Qinetiq and Inte
 l. Her work ranges from academic pure mathematics\, to applied engineering
work\, exploited during extended periods in industry laboratories in Sili
con Valley and Cambridge. The unifying theme is applying computer science
methods to mathematical problems\, and more recently she has been working
with social scientists to understand how to make online collaborations in
mathematics more effective. Ursula Martin is a Fellow of the British Compu
ter Society\, the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications\, and the
Institute of Engineering and Technology\, and was honoured with a CBE in
the 2012 New Year's Honours list. She is currently working at the School
of Informatics in the University of Edinburgh as a SICSA Distinguished Vis
 itor.
