DESCRIPTION:This argument-driven paper will probe the industrial precedent
s and\ncultural legacy of machine breaking in the West Riding of Yorkshire
during\nthe spring of 1812. The central analysis will characterise Luddis
m as a\nconservative economic and social phenomenon with a provenance in t
he sense\nof entitlement found in earlier trade societies\, and argue agai
nst seeing\nthe movement as part of the broader sweep of nineteenth-centur
y political\ndevelopment.\n\nAlthough the paper will focus on Luddism in Y
orkshire\, it will be argued\nthat the analysis and conclusions can be (su
bstantively) extended to the\nother industrial regions in which unrest occ
urred. A range of evidential\nclasses will be harnessed in support of this
argument\, including Luddite\nletters\, prosecution papers from the Home
Office and Treasury Solicitor\ndeposits at Kew\, judicial records from Yor
 kshire\, and a corpus of regional\nfiction.\n
