DESCRIPTION:Spider and silkworm silks fascinate materials scientists due t
o their extraordinary mechanical properties despite being produced from re
newable feedstock under ambient conditions. Recent applications of classic
material characterisation techniques have offered additional insight into
the physics behind these properties. Specifically\, I will discuss recent
experiments that use ballistic impact and laser acoustic measurements to
obtain high-rate / high-frequency properties\, and the relevance of these
results to the material modelling and evolutionary significance of silks.
