DESCRIPTION:The Klein-Gordon equation is a partial differential equation w
 hich describes quantum mechanical particles in a potential. We show that a
 n operator pencil can be associated with the equation whose spectrum is un
 bounded both from below and above. We give criteria on the potential for t
 he existence of a gap in the spectrum of pencil.\n \nThis is a joint work 
 with M. Koppen and C. Tretter.\n\n
