DESCRIPTION:The ESLC was administered for the first time in 2011. Results
were published in June 2012\, reporting on the language proficiency of sec
ondary school students by reference to Common European Framework levels. T
he survey was conducted for the European Commission by a multinational con
sortium led by Cambridge ESOL. Sixteen countries or administrative regions
took part\, including England. Five languages were tested: English\, Fren
ch\, German\, Italian and Spanish\; only two of these in each country. Que
stionnaires administered to students\, teachers and principals provided co
ntextual information which was used to explore factors associated with hig
her levels of achievement. In this talk I will outline the design of the s
urvey and its main findings\, and discuss conclusions that might be drawn
for European language policy\, and also for language teaching.\n
