DESCRIPTION:The LCDM cosmological model accounts for an impressive array o
f data on\nthe large-scale structure of the universe\, from scales of a fe
 w\nmegaparsecs to a few gigaparsecs. On submegaparsec scales\, however\, t
he\nmodel cannot be tested with the same degree of rigour as on larger sca
les\nwhere microwave background radiation data and measures of galaxy\nclu
stering provide clean and well-understood diagnostics. Yet\, it is\nprecis
ely on these small scales that the nature of the dark matter\nmanifests it
self most clearly. I will discuss theoretical predictions for\nthe small-s
cale structure of the universe which appear to be discrepant\nwith recent
kinematical data for satellite galaxies of the Milky Way.\nPossible soluti
ons range from the relatively mundane - that the mass of\nour galaxy is sm
aller than is often thought - through exotic baryonic\nprocesses to the mo
re radical assumption that the dark matter is not what\nthe standard theor
 y assumes.
