DESCRIPTION:For half a century operating systems used a single bit to make
\nplacement and migration decisions for pages of memory.\nThe historic ref
erence (“use”) bit in the page entry indicates\nif a memory page was u
sed in the past. Heuristics (e.g.\, clock\nalgorithms) were built upon thi
s single bit to extract the reference\ncharacteristics supporting higher m
emory management strategies.\n\nWith the upcoming of heterogeneous memory
architectures with\nnon-uniform memory access\, the time has come to rethi
nk the\ninterface between the memory subsystem and the operating system\nt
 o provide comprehensive memory-reference information that\nguides memory m
anagement decisions.\nThe talk demonstrates the demand of operating system
 s for information\nabout access frequency\, gap distribution\, and request
origin to find\nthe best location and access policy for a memory region w
 ith respect\nto latency\, bandwidth\, and energy consumption.\n\n
