SUMMARY:Codesign in action: the hardware and software architecture of Blue
Gene/Q and its impact on scientific applications - Dr Jeff Hammond (Argon
 ne National Laboratory)

DESCRIPTION:Blue Gene/Q is the third generation of a family of massively p
arallel\nsupercomputers designed by IBM in collaboration with the US Depar
tment of Energy. It reflects a substantial effort in codesign: the hardwa
re is designed to meet specific application needs and\, in turn\, applicat
ions are tuned to take advantage of its unique features. \n\nThis talk wi
ll describe the Blue Gene/Q hardware and software architecture\, identifyi
ng the critical features for scalability and overal\nperformance within a
non-disruptive software environment. \nTechniques for optimizing librarie
s and scientific applications for this and other next-generation architect
ures will be given. Finally\, a description of porting efforts and perfor
mance results for chemistry and material science applications will be prov
 ided\, including LAMMPS\, NAMD\, NWChem\, GPAW\, QMCPACK and MADNESS.
