DESCRIPTION:In my 2006 monograph on Adaptive Atmospheric Modeling the last
section titled "Roadmap for the next five years" outlines several aspects
of numerical methods for multi-scale phenomena in the atmosphere. Now\, m
ore than five years later\, it is time to review a few of the issues raise
d in 2006. As one would expect\, the grand solution to adaptive multi-scal
e modeling has not been found so far\, and some solutions have generated n
ew questions. But a lot has been achieved since 2006 and it is interesting
to see\, which directions have been taken. I will cover the aspects of co
nsistent numerical methods\, refinement criteria and strategies\, applicat
ions and efficiency of adaptive methods in atmosphere and ocean applicatio
 ns.\n
