DESCRIPTION:The author has recently been appointed Chief Scientific Adviso
 r (CSA) to the Department for Transport. The brief is to provide science a
 nd technology input to inform policy. \nBy discussing examples ranging fro
 m High Speed 2\, the raising of speed limits on motorways and the provisio
 n of additional airport capacity\, the author will examine the role of the
  CSA in Government. Some insights into the generation of a national transp
 ort strategy will be given.
