DESCRIPTION:Type Ia supernovae are known as the precise distance indicator
s that\nallowed the remarkable discovery of the accelerated expansion of t
he\nuniverse. Despite this astounding feat\, there still remain large\nunc
ertainties in many of the key issues surrounding these extremely\nenergeti
c events. These uncertainties\, while not being horribly detrimental\nto t
heir use as distance indicators\, hamper the understanding of the far\nrea
ching consequences these cosmic factories of heavy elements have on the\nc
hemical evolution of the Universe. \n\nType Ia Supernovae can be divided i
nto three distinct phases. The\npre-supernova evolution\, the explosion it
self and the expansion phase\, which\nresults in spectra and light-curves.
In this talk I will first presents our\nfindings on the progenitor questi
on (pre-supernova phase). In addition\, I\nwill discuss my work on automat
ing spectral analysis and how it links with\nexplosion physics and the pro
genitor question. Finally\, I will briefly\nhighlight Universities of Toro
nto's involvement in arctic astronomy and\nintroduce our transient search
 with the telescope CATS.
