DESCRIPTION:Denis Weaire (TCM\, Cavendish Laboratory 1966-70) will recall
how he developed an interest in structure\, first in the solid state and t
hen\nin soft matter. Foams present a variety of structures\, ordered and d
isordered. One of the most famous is the Weaire-Phelan foam\, recently rea
lised in the lab for the first time.\nConfined systems add a further rich
range of possibilities. This has led us into the consideration of packings
of hard spheres\, particularly in a cylinder. \nThe development of X-ray
tomography ensures a lively future for the whole subject.\n
