DESCRIPTION:Polyrotaxanes in which many cyclodextrins are entrapped along
a polymer chain have been prepared. Molecular tubes have been prepared by
binding neighboring cyclodextrins with short biding reagents and then remo
ving a polymer chain by cleaving stopper groups of the polyrotaxane. Artif
icial polymerases with a molecular clamp were designed and prepared. Cyclo
dextrins were found to initiate ring opening polymerization of some lacton
es with high selectivity. Monomers were found to be inserted between cyclo
dextrins and the growing chain. Cyclodextrins dimers were found to be much
better catalysts for the ring opening polymerization. One of the cyclodex
trins plays an important role as a molecular clamp as shown in DNA polymer
 ases in nature.
