DESCRIPTION:After a brief review of the dark energy problem and possible e
 xplanations\, I will discuss a bit how cosmological observations can chara
 cterize the properties of the dark energy. I will highlight some pitfalls 
 like apparent matter stresses and degeneracies but show that we can in pri
 nciple still test large classes of theories with the upcoming cosmological
  surveys.
