ecording past ice sheet dynamics - Dr. Michael Flowerdew

DESCRIPTION:The age\, composition and shifts in the provenance of ice raft
ed debris can potentially independently test models for the past evolution
of ice sheets. Interpreting Antarctic derived material is\, however\, co
mpromised by its largely unknown geology\, an apparent lack of suitable pr
ovenance techniques and an incomplete understanding of subglacial processe
 s. As shall be shown\, possible solutions to these shortcomings can come t
hrough measuring the Pb isotopic composition of ice rafted feldspars. Th
e resulting improved provenance signal can help identify regions where sub
glacial erosion has occurred but ultimately\, any interpretation from ice
rafted material must be treated with caution until the concealed geology i
 s better understood.
