DESCRIPTION:Cambridge Engineering Department\, supported by the Royal Acad
 emy of Engineering has just created a new post of Visiting Professor of In
 novation.  This post strengthens and extends the work of the Department’
 s strategic theme on “Inspiring Research through Industrial Collaboratio
 n”. Its objectives are: To raise the profile of innovation within the De
 partment\; to provide inspiration\, mentoring and knowledge on the practic
 e of innovation to students and academics\; and to strengthen collaboratio
 n with industry.\nThis position will be shared by three people with differ
 ent backgrounds and experience: Pieter Knook\, Sam Beale and Rick Mitchell
 . Although they will work as a team each will have a particular focus: Pie
 ter Knook on graduate students\, Sam Beale on Staff and Rick Mitchell on t
 he undergraduate population.\n\nPieter and his colleagues will introduce t
 hemselves in more detail and outline their aims and hopes for their new ro
 le. They are also looking forward to receiving for guidance on how they mi
 ght best be of use to the department and how to interact most effectively.
  Please come to welcome them and bring suggestions as to how they can make
  the most useful contribution to this Division and to the wider Engineerin
 g Department.\n\n\n\nPieter Knook is currently Chairman of Better Generati
 on (a renewable energy start up)\, Pulsant (a UK hosting company focused o
 n SME) and The Institution (a Swedish mobile device management company) an
 d serves on several boards as well as being a Cambridge Angel and Venture 
 Partner with Octopus. He was formerly Director of Internet Services at Vod
 afone\, and spent 18 years in senior roles at Microsoft (including Senior 
 Vice President Mobile Communications and President of Microsoft Asia).\n\n
 Sam Beale was\, until the end of April this year\, Head of Technology Stra
 tegy at Rolls-Royce Group. This role included management of the company’
 s University Technology Centre network and support for the Chief Scientifi
 c Officer and for the Directors of Engineering & Technology\, and Research
  & Technology. He formerly held a range of senior design and engineering p
 ositions within the company.\n\nRick Mitchell is currently a visiting fell
 ow in the IfM and Visiting Professor of Innovation Management at Cranfield
  School of management. He was formerly Group Technical and Quality Directo
 r at Domino Printing Sciences\, International Development Manager with Phi
 lips Mobile Radio and Senior Corporate Planner for Philips Electronics UK.
