DESCRIPTION:I will describe how recent work inspired by Madsen and Weiss' 
 proof of Mumford's conjecture (on the stable cohomology of the moduli spac
 e of\nRiemann surfaces) gives a conceptual and computational understanding
 \nof moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces with extra structure.\n\nIn particu
 lar\, I will focus on two interesting examples: the moduli\nspaces of r-Sp
 in Riemann surfaces\, and the universal Picard variety\nover the moduli sp
 ace of curves\, and explain how these methods can be used to compute their
 \nintegral Picard groups.
