DESCRIPTION:It is well known that Google has been involved in R&D in the a
reas of content based analysis and 3d reconstruction for some time. Less w
ell known perhaps is its efforts in media signal processing as well as mus
ic media analysis and recommendation. In this seminar three tech leads in
these areas will give a brief overview of this work and also expose how th
e research community can contribute to open source efforts in media commun
ications over the web.\n\nNext Generation Video Coding for internet broadc
asting Paul Wilkins\, Chrome Media\n\nEstablishing the web as the most com
pelling video distribution platform requires coding techniques that are al
igned with the internet system overall : Low complexity\, error resilient\
, high quality\, dynamic and critically: free and open. The coding team at
Google has been working on several codecs\, shipping vp8 in 2010\, and ju
st a few months away from shipping its successor. These codecs are used in
multiple Google products (YouTube\, Chrome\, Android) for realtime and on
-demand video applications.\nThis talk outlines new efforts in the next ge
neration video codec and the advantages it presents. The talk also shows h
ow the research community can contribute to this project.\n\nReal Time Com
munications : The WebRTC standard Jan Skoglund\, Tech Lead\, Chrome Media\
n\nWebRTC brings high quality\, low-latency video conferencing to the web
browser without any plugins. The technology behind WebRTC has been in deve
lopment for many years and is now free and open source.\nThis talk outline
s the webRTC system and gives some pointers to the underlying technology w
hich includes efficient schemes for bandwidth estimation and real time imp
lementations for media coding. The research community is encouraged to con
tribute to the standard as well as exploit the layer as an excellent teach
ing tool for internet communications.\n\nGoogle Research and Music\nTom Wa
lters\, Google Ears Project Group\n\nThis talk outlines some of the work i
n the Google research group in the area of music recommendation and copyri
ght i.d. An overview of the breadth of work in audio research is also pres
 ented.\n
