DESCRIPTION:A topological insulator is a material that is an insulator on
its\ninterior\, but has special conducting states on its surface. These s
urface\nstates are unlike any other known two dimensional conductor. They
are\ncharacterized by a unique Dirac type dispersion relation and are prot
ected\nby a topological property of material's underlying electronic struc
ture.\nIn this talk we will review the theoretical and experimental advanc
es that\nopened the topological insulator field and discuss the related ph
enomena\nof topological superconductivity\, in which the protected boundar
y states\nare Majorana fermions. We will discuss prospects for observing
Majorana\nfermion states using Josephson junction devices that combine top
ological\ninsulators with superconductivity.\n\nPlease note the unusual ti
 me and location.
