DESCRIPTION:A characteristic feature of colloidal particles is their Brown
ian motion. An individual colloidal particle explores space with its mean-
squared displacement increasing linearly with time. However\, much more co
mplex dynamics are displayed by interacting particles and particles in ext
ernal fields. Since colloidal systems are governed by thermal energy\, eve
n small inter-particle interactions or modest external potentials can sign
ificantly modify their dynamics (and structure).\nI will briefly mention a
n effect of inter-particle interactions\, but mainly discuss the dynamics
of colloidal particles in external potentials. This will include the respo
nse of colloidal particles to different external potentials: gravity\, mec
hanical forces (shear) and optical forces. \n
