SUMMARY:Atmospheric science and policy - the challenge of making them cons
istent - Prof. Martin Williams\, Kings College London
DTSTART:20121119T141500Z

CONTACT:Dr Alex Archibald
DESCRIPTION:The talk will explore areas in air quality where public policy
in the UK and the EU are not always consistent with the best scientific e
vidence. Illustrations will be taken\, inter alia\, from the area of motor
vehicle emissions where significant discrepancies exist between regulatio
n and real world behaviour of vehicles\, leading to poor air quality. The
talk will explore the reasons behind this failure and point the way forwar
d for future challenges. The air quality/climate change interface is anoth
er area where science and policy potentially diverge\, generally to the de
triment of public health. These issues will also be explored and optimal s
 olutions discussed.
