SUMMARY:A century of the proton: from Rutherford to Higgs - Prof. James St
 irling\, University of Cambridge

DESCRIPTION:The "Higgs boson" discovery announced at CERN just a few month
s ago resulted from high-energy collisions of protons\, the particles that
comprise the nucleus of hydrogen atoms. We trace the history of our knowl
edge of the proton\, from its early identification as a fundamental partic
le\, through the discovery that it was in fact made up of more elementary
"quark" constituents\, and finally to its role in the production of new pa
rticles at the CERN Large Hadron Collider.\n\nThis talk is *FREE FOR EVERY
 ONE!*
