DESCRIPTION:The talk is intended as an introduction to geometric measure t
 heory and minimal surfaces and should be accessible to 1st year CCA PhD st
 udents. No prior knowledge of GMT will be required to follow the talk. Fam
 iliarity with basic measure theory and differential geometry will be helpf
 ul.\n\nThe GMT part of the talk will cover\n* n-rectifiable sets\,\n* rect
 ifiable n-varifolds\,\n* currents and\n* general varifolds.\n\nOn the mini
 mal surfaces part the highlights are:\n* first variation\,\n* monotonicity
  formula and\n* connection with elliptic PDEs.\n
