DESCRIPTION:The South Pole Telescope has identified a new population of du
sty star-forming galaxies lying above redshift 2. These rare\, ultra-brig
ht systems are magnified by strong gravitational lensing\, which allows us
to study the formation of massive galaxies in a detail that would be othe
rwise impossible. I describe the discovery of this important new populati
on\, and discuss the on-going follow-up programme which includes data from
  ALMA\, HST and Herschel.\n
