DESCRIPTION:Cell survival in the face of stress relies upon linking the pe
rception of change to appropriate downstream responses. The actin cytoskel
eton\, in addition to its better known role as a cellular scaffold\, is em
erging as an important co-ordinator of stress perception and response. Of
particular note appears to be the conserved role that actin plays in regul
ating mitochondrial function in response to a variety of stresses. This re
lationship can be utilised to engage the mitochondria within newly discove
red retrograde signalling pathways\, or to initiate apoptosis. Using the m
odel eukaryote S. cerevisae we have identified new pathways that link the
health of both the actin cytoskeleton and the mitochondria to environmenta
l responses that determine cell fate.
