DESCRIPTION:Swine dysentery\, mucohaemorrhagic diarrhea caused by Brachysp
ira hyodysenteriae\, is a severe production limiting disease of swine. In
2009\, pigs in western Canada with clinical signs indistinguishable from s
wine dysentery were observed. Despite the presence of spirochetes on feca
l smears\, recognized Brachyspira spp. including B. hyodysenteriae could n
ot be identified. A phylogenetically distinct Brachyspira\, called B. ha
mpsonii strain 30446\, however was isolated. The presentation will cover a
spects of the discovery\, recent field investigations\, the organism\, dia
 gnostics and experimental reproduction.
