DESCRIPTION:Strings of laser-cooled trapped ions can be precisely controll
ed and \nmanipulated with coherent narrow-band laser light. The use of ent
angling \nlaser-ion interactions opens up the prospect of simulating the p
hysics \nof interacting spins. I will present experiments that we have car
ried \nout with small ion crystals. In a second experiment with a two-spec
ies \nion crystal\, we have demonstrated a novel type of quantum logic \ns
pectroscopy. Using one ion that is easy to manipulate and to measure\, \nw
e detect whether a second ion has scattered a single photon by \npreparing
the two ion crystal in a non-classical state of motion
