DESCRIPTION:In the first part of the talk\, we define a real-valued invari
 ant for finitely presented groups called residual deficiency. Given a fini
 tely presented group G\, its residual deficiency gives a lower bound for t
 he deficiency of some finite index subgroups of G. Then we present some pr
 operties of the residual deficiency and show how it relates to already exi
 sting invariants which are used to study finitely presented infinite group
 s.\n\nIn the second part of the talk\, we show a technique that helps esti
 mate the\nresidual deficiency of one relator quotients of triangle groups.
  This helps\nus conclude\, under the right conditions\, that some of these
  groups have\nfinite index subgroups with deficiency greater than one\, wh
 ich as we will\nsee\, is a strong property.\n
