DESCRIPTION:n this seminar I will draw on a commissioned report produced b
 y an international team and presented at ICME12\, in order to discuss find
 ings\, grounded on a literature review and a survey of university mathemat
 ics lecturers' views\, concerning the transition from secondary school to 
 university mathematics. The seminar will be sample-based and its second pa
 rt will focus on the particular issue of students' first encounters with m
 athematical proof and the ways in which these encounters may influence tra
 nsition. For the purposes of this second part I will draw on an ongoing st
 udy that examines students’ mathematical writing of proofs through the l
 enses of the Harel and Sowder taxonomy.
