DESCRIPTION: In this talk I will discuss the ambiguous relationship betwee
 n theoretical models of individuals and theoretical models of groups. Maki
 ng the inference from one to the other implies being able to put variance 
 in observations in its just place. We will discuss some of my recent findi
 ngs which unpack group averages with a view to examining individual childr
 en's profiles. Examples will be drawn from my studies on how children deve
 lop an understanding of the physical and social worlds\, with typically de
 veloping children and some who have been identified on the autism spectrum
 .
