DESCRIPTION:Light-matter interaction beyond the perturbative regime leads 
 to the concept of strong coupling and of polaritons\, quantum quasiparticl
 es whose eigenstates are coherent superposition of photon and electron wav
 efunctions. After the key observations with atomic systems coupled to micr
 owave resonators by S.\nHaroche and coworkers\, polaritons have been obser
 ved in semiconductor systems\, both employing excitonic and intersubband r
 esonances of heterostructured materials. In this seminar I will review the
  most relevant physical and applicative issues dealing with intersubband p
 olaritons in the\nmid- and far-infrared spectral ranges\, with special att
 ention to the potentiality of devices where the electromagnetic resonance 
 is provided by a photonic crystal structure.\n
