DESCRIPTION:In various situations in mathematics\, considering approximate
analogues of precise algebraic properties can lead to the objects they de
fine becoming far more widely applicable. An area that has received consi
derable attention in that regard in recent years is the study of 'approxim
ate groups'. Originating in additive combinatorics\, these objects have in
creasingly been applied to obtain results in a diverse array of other fie
lds\, such as number theory\, differential geometry\, geometric group theo
ry and theoretical computer science.\n\nA number of authors have made atte
mpts at understanding approximate subgroups of nilpotent groups\, with par
tial results due to Green-Ruzsa\, Tao and Breuillard-Green\, amongst other
s\, appearing in recent years. In this talk I will outline a result classi
fying the approximate subgroups of an arbitrary nilpotent group\, generali
sing all of these earlier works.\n
