DESCRIPTION:The RAPID-MOC program has been monitoring the overturning circ
ulation in the Atlantic since April 2004. From 7 years of data\, we have
found startling variability on all timescales\, from months to interannual
. I will briefly describe the observations\, and then talk about two rece
nt findings from the RAPID project--the role of eddies in setting the stre
ngth of the Gulf Stream in the Florida Straits\, and the impact of dramati
c recent interannual variability in the MOC on the heat budget of the Nort
 h Atlantic.
