DESCRIPTION:There is an urgent and growing need for ‘actionable’ infor
 mation about the planet\; information that governments\, policy makers\, b
 usinesses and citizens can use to make effective decisions about our futur
 e. The most valuable form of actionable information is predictions. We out
 line Microsoft’s research programme developing new science to enable bet
 ter predictions and provide actionable information about the future of our
  world\, for the world. We present a set of new scientific models\, method
 s and tools we have developed\, each of which represents a substantial ste
 p forward in terms of the ability to generate useful\, defensible\, predic
 tive models of key planetary components (e.g.\, future climate\, food\, ca
 rbon\, disease). Combined\, they offer a radically new prediction engine f
 or generating and sharing actionable information about the planet.
