DESCRIPTION:Prof. Howard Griffiths will discuss the food security debate: 
 the world’s population is expected to increase to 9 billion over the upc
 oming 50 years\; can we rely on traditional plant breeding to deliver in t
 he face of intensifying climatic extremes? Does the solution lie in engine
 ering plants to enhance photosynthetic rates\, crop production and therefo
 re yield? what are the technical and social challenges of such a scheme? T
 he presentation will focus on the “hows”\,  whereas the following disc
 ussion will focus on the “whys”\, and consider the pitfalls and pratfa
 lls which thus far have bedeviled the food security debate.
