DESCRIPTION:In the Proceedings of the 1978 Williamstown Conference on Harm
 onic\nAnalysis\, Stein raised the question of the manner in which one migh
 t expect\nKakeya or Nikodym maximal functions to control the disc multipli
 er or\nBochner-Riesz multiplier operators via L^2 weighted inequalities. T
 his\ndifficult problem is still far from being solved even in its simplest
 \ntwo-dimensional form. In this talk we present the results of a more prim
 itive\ninvestigation into such control of oscillatory integral operators (
 mainly on\nthe line) by geometrically-defined maximal operators.
