DESCRIPTION:How and with what effects was the rhetoric of rights - the lin
 gua franca of liberalism - deployed in an avowedly illiberal society like 
 the Soviet Union?  How do activists invoke rights in today’s Russia?  Th
 is lecture will analyze continuities and ruptures in the career of civil a
 nd human rights as a mode of resistance from the period of “developed so
 cialism” to the Putin era.\n\nProfessor Benjamin Nathans (University of 
 Pennsylvania) will deliver the ninth lecture as part of the 'Resistance in
  Russia and Eastern Europe' public lecture series\, organised by the Depar
 tment of Slavonic Studies and the Cambridge Committee for Russian and East
  European Studies.
