DESCRIPTION:In many models of the very early universe\, a tangle of relati
 vistic vortices - cosmic strings - are spontaneously formed at a phase tra
 nsition. I will briefly review the models and observational constraints\, 
 compare and contrast cosmic strings with superconductor flux tubes and sup
 erfluid vortices\, and describe the latest large-scale simulations of thei
 r formation and decay.\n
